Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the uterus. A “total hysterectomy” means that the entire uterus including the cervix is removed. A “subtotal” hysterectomy, also known as a “partial hysterectomy” means that the uterus is removed but the cervix is not removed. In medical terms this is called a “supracervical hysterectomy.” A “supracervical hysterectomy” means that the uterus is removed “above the cervix.”

A hysterectomy does not remove the ovaries or fallopian tubes. To remove an ovary is called “oophorectomy.” To remove a fallopian tube is called “salpingectomy.” To remove both tubes and both ovaries is called “bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy.”

A hysterectomy does NOT place a woman in menopause. Removing the ovaries does place a woman in menopause if she is not already in natural menopause.

There are several ways to perform a hysterectomy. Dr. Kidd performs minimally invasive laparoscopic hysterectomy. She places a scope through the belly button to visualize, then places 2 or 3 other ports to place long thin instruments. The incisions are tiny, less than one inch. Laparoscopic hysterectomies are far less painful than traditional abdominal hysterectomies. Women recover much faster.

Dr. Alexandra Kidd performs both traditional laparoscopic surgery as well as da Vinci assisted robotic surgery. Dr. Kidd is 100% in control of the da Vinci assist. The da Vinci surgical system provides a magnified 3D high definition vision system and tiny wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human wrist. The da Vinci enables the surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, dexterity and control.
